What We Do?

The Human Security Lab at UMass-Amherst supports a community of researchers interested in human (in-)security, issues around freedom from fear (violence, conflict, human rights abuse, democracy), freedom from want (economic security, food security, climate security, health security), and the role of global of inequality in the human interest. An interdisciplinary initiative, the Lab brings together scholars from different departments (e.g., economics, political science, psychological and brain sciences) and colleges (e.g., CNS, SBS), and different backgrounds, embodying UMass’ commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

What is Human Security?

What is Human Security? The concept of “human security,” originally articulated by UN Secretary General Boutrous Boutrous Ghali, puts the well-being of vulnerable populations, rather than protection of state borders, at the Institute of security thinking. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the transnational nature of threats to human security and the value of strong global architectures in the human interest has been laid bare to governments, global policy-makers and, most importantly, donors. As human security requires a comprehensive approach to human welfare intersecting political science, psychology, economics, and neuroscience, we engage scholars from many areas of the university, and aim to partner with researchers, educators and practitioners across the globe.

“It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.”
