Faculty and Student Researchers Brief State Department

Professor Charli Carpenter and a team of graduate and undergraduate students briefed the State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor on the findings of their newly published report on human rights in Ukraine.

The report was launched this month and is based on survey research conducted by Human Security Lab in Ukraine in collaboration with the research firm RIWI and funded with a generous grant from the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

The briefing was attended by doctoral candidate Jenna Norosky, who is conducting research with Carpenter this summer on refugee and civilian protection issues in the country. Norosky is also the recipient of research grants from Human Security Lab for her dissertation research on the international community’s approach to conflict-related sexual violence against men.

2023 UMass graduate and former Human Security Lab Assistant Project Manager Camryn Hughes also attended the briefing and contributed to discussions about the methodology used to analyze the survey results from Ukraine. Hughes is now working in legal advocacy for refugees and continues to consult with Human Security Lab on its nuclear, Ukraine and Afghanistan projects.
