Human Securtiy Lab director Charli Carpenter visited Doha, Qatar in August 2025 to join a recorded panel discussion with other global scholars about the nature and future of war. The televised debate was released this week online and curated / broadcast by Al-Jazeera TV.

Carpenter was joined by Stanford historian Ian Morris, archaeologist Brian Ferguson, and professor of international law Noha Aboueldahab for a moderated live discussion whose topics included: what is ‘war’? is war inevitable or is it a choice? does war have upsides? what are the rules of war? is there any hope for humanity?

The conversation was part of the Doha Debates vodcast series, which brings together intellectuals from around the world to sit together in the Arabic majlis tradition, to dialogue on difficult issues affecting the global community.
